The higher the value for x, the faster your ship will be. I find that a value of 2 is a very comfortable speed.

For pulse bullets, x = 2.
For swirl cutter, x = 5.
For bubble beam, x = 8.

It's worth pointing out that these codes (as well as VisitntX's code above) work with the Japanese version of the game, too.
